The word “fool” is found in 62 scriptures; “fool’s” in seven; “fools” in 42; “foolish” in 52; and “foolishness” in 20 verses. It warns of being a companion of fools. How do you spot a fool?

  1. A fool is revealed by his speech. Ecclesiastes 5:3: A fool’s voice is known by multitude of words. Ecclesiastes 10:14: A fool also is full of words.

  2. The fool has slanderous words. Proverbs 10:18: He that hides hatred with lying lips, and he that utters a slander, is a fool.

  3. The fool has scoffing words. Psalms 14:1: The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

  4. The fool has swift words. Proverbs 29:11: A fool utters all his mind: but a wise man keeps it in till afterwards. Proverbs 29:20: Do you see a man that is hasty in his words? There is more hope of a fool than of him.

  5. A fool is revealed by his steps. Ecclesiastes 10:3: Yea also, when he that is a fool walks by the way, his wisdom fails him, and he says to everyone that he is a fool.

  6. A fool has sinful steps. Proverbs 26:11: As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool returns to his folly.

  7. A fool is revealed by his spirit. Proverbs 14:16: A wise man fears, and departs from evil: but the fool rages, and is confident.

  8. A fool has a proud spirit. Proverbs 28:26: He that trusts in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walks wisely, he shall be delivered. Proverbs 14:3: In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them. A wise man humbles himself and lifts up Jesus!

  9. A fool is stubborn; therefore, he is not teachable. Proverbs 23:9: Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of your words.

Who is the center of attention by talking constantly? Who gives more information than people want or need? Who is a “know-it-all”? Who asks no questions but always has answers. Who refuses feedback on this behavior?

Matthew 12:37: “By a man’s words he shall be justified or condemned.” When a fool repents, his verbal behavior changes. Can you spot a fool? Are you the center of attention? Knights are men of deeds, not words.
